Frequently Asked Questions
I want to set up an appointment. How does it work?
We typically offer a free 15-20 minute consultation to get an idea of what you’re looking for and what’s bringing you. The first full session is a psychosocial assessment lasting 60 minutes. The initial session will determine if we’re a good fit. All individual sessions after that are 45-50 minutes in length. Please contact us directly to set up a consultation.
What can I expect from therapy?
Great question! The therapeutic process can help us to better understand ourselves and develop the tools we need to live the life we deserve and desire. Early on in our work together, we will set goals for what you want to get out of therapy. You can expect some suggestions about how to integrate our work together into your daily life. From time to time, we may offer you journal prompts and exercises to do between our sessions. We will compassionately challenge you. We will not tell you what to do or make decisions for you.

How long does therapy last?
Short answer: this varies person to person. We generally recommend six months of weekly therapy to start in order to really see progress. After six months, we will reevaluate goals and frequency of sessions.
What are your fees? How do I pay for therapy?
Please visit the fees page for more information. We will keep a credit card on file for you, and you will be charged through the platform Simple Practice at the end of each session.
Do you have a sliding scale?
Yes. Heart Root reserves a limited number of sliding scale spots for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC clients experiencing financial hardship. Please note: all sliding scale spots are currently full.
Do you take insurance?
We are Out of Network with insurance companies. If you have Out of Network benefits through your health insurance company, you are likely eligible for reimbursement for the cost of your sessions. Most insurance companies reimburse between 30-80% of session cost for Out of Network providers. At the end of each month, we will provide you with a detailed invoice (“superbill”) that you can submit as a claim. It is recommended that you call your health insurance company and inquire about “Out of Network mental health benefits” for clarity.

Can I use my HSA card?
Yes! We are able to accept HSA cards as a form of payment. We recommend double-checking how much you are able to spend on health-related expenses.
Do you see clients virtually?
Yes! We are able to see anyone in New York State for therapy via HIPAA-compliant Telehealth technology. We also see therapy clients in person at our office in Croton-on-Hudson.
What are your hours?
Heart Root's client hours are:
-
Monday 12-7pm
-
Tuesday 12-7pm
-
Wednesday 12-7pm
-
Thursday 12-7pm
What is the cancellation/reschedule policy?
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel your session same day, you will be charged for the full cost of that session. If you need to reschedule your session, we will do our best to accommodate you. Sessions need to be rescheduled within 72 hours of the original session time in order to avoid the cancellation fee.

What if I'm sick?
This is such an important question. Heart Root is committed to reducing risk for immunocompromised clients and populations. We ask that you are transparent about any symptoms or early warning signs of illness. If you are scheduled to come in person, your session can be moved to virtual or rescheduled entirely. Please let your therapist know in advance if you are at all symptomatic.
